It was an early two consecutive losing stints for Brgy. Ginebra at the start of the 2nd Season of Commissioner’s Cup, and they still have a long way to go before getting the crown they hope to have.

Brgy. Ginebra was one of the teams who played in the opening of the Commissioner’s Cup this last Tuesday, January 27 held at Mall of Asia Arena. They fell in the hands of the Meralco Boltz which retain its lead all the way to the fourth quarter. Boltz’s import paved way to their first victory. Ginebra’s intimidating towering heights never affected the nice play-offs of their opponent.

Also, The Kings experienced the same fate as they did not make it to out win the underdog team last season, the Barako Bulls. The game was held at Binan, Laguna on February 1.

The Bulls started the game with a 9-point lead, but the Kings trimmed down the deficit and steal the lead point up to eight points before the end of the second half. Caguioa heated up the court to enliven the Ginebra spirit; he led the team all the way to their leading point. However, the Bulls were not left behind as they were able to cut down the leading points of the Kings making it only to 2-point lead in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged shots while executing impressive turn-overs and assists. The game ended, 68-69, a point lead advantage for the Barako. The team’s victory is their second after beating Kia Motors in the opening of the season.

In the recent game, Slaughter had instinctively executed the game and managed to help the team. The team’s import Dunnigan, despite his health condition, still continued the game and contributed not only in the offense but also more importantly in the defence.

A Long Way For The Crown

The players knew the pressure of being part of Ginebra. Their fans are looking for their angst, for their firing offense and defence, and for their applauding execution— things that are so apparent on the wants of the team but look so lacking. The team’s campaign to win the title this season may not be a good start, but improvement on how they play as a team assures that they will be returning. Their defeats should not be the lone basis; their improvement on how they play with the Bulls was a good start.

It may take a long way for the crown, but that time will surely come… let us hope and pray… that this season will be for our team… for my team… GINEBRA!
